Smart home automation system using Bluetooth technology IEEE Conference Publication

3.3V TX output of HC-05 is directly connected to the RX input of PIC microcontroller. As 3.3V will be taken as LOGIC HIGH as per 5V TTL specifications. The Bluetooth module used in this project is HC-05 Linvor Bluetooth module. It is an easy- to-use Bluetooth serial port protocol module, designed for a transparent wireless serial connection set-up. The module has 34 PINS for configuration/interfacing of Bluetooth module with microcontrollers.

The supply from the battery will be regulated to 5V and 12V using 7805 and 7812 ICs. The pin 1 of both the voltage regulator ICs will be connected to the anode of the battery and pin 2 of both ICs will be connected to ground. The respective voltage outputs will be drawn from pin 3 of the respective voltage regulator ICs. An LED along with a 10K Ω pull-up resistor can also be connected between common ground and output pin to get a visual hint of supply continuity. Output of PIC 16F876A microcontroller is connected load unit i.e., home appliances via driver IC 2803 and relay unit. Driver drives the respective load for the respective received command via relay as a switching unit.

Software part consist of Arduino integrated development environment and Bluetooth terminal smartphone application which is used for wireless communication between smartphone and Arduino board. The application of home automation system collects data from all your smart devices. This central hub can be controlled through a smartphone device or by voice control. It can even act on its own provided it’s given set rules and conditions to follow.

Home Automation System has been designed using PIC 16F876A microcontroller and HC-06 bluetooth module. It can control a number of home appliances like lights, fans, bulbs and many more using electro-mechanical relay. When the circuit is powered on, the Arduino loads the required libraries and switches relays to OFF position. Some initial messages are flashed on the LCD display and the status of all the four devices is shown OFF on the LCD. The Arduino waits for the numeric command to be received from the Bluetooth module.

We will be using the 4 relay Arduino module in our home automation project. The diagram shows the pin configuration of a 16×2 LCD display. However, we will use 4 of these pins to connect with Arduino. The HC-05 comes with multiple pins and indicators, which helps to control different operations and view their states through indicators.

Very compact design can fit in small area, manly this board is made for low voltage application. The working principle of ultrasonic sensor is demonstrated. Ping is input ultrasonic waves which are transmitted at the velocity of 340 mls and Echo is reflected output of sensor which is used to determine the distance. The ultrasonic sensor HC- SR04 parameter specification with their limitations. In proposed work ultrasonic sensor is used for the measurement of water level inside the water tank.

The device consists of eight NPN-Darlington pairs that feature high-voltage outputs for switching inductive loads. The collector-current rating of each Darlington pair is 500 mA. For setting up a bluetooth module, an i'ble can be found here. For creating 3.3v output for the bluetooth module, I have used LM317 IC v-reg with a 10k potentiometer.

You may require a password to connect to the module, the default password is 1234. What happens when the controller receives a particular ASCII value it switches ON or OFF a relay. I have used some flag variables which check whether a particular relay is ON or OFF. A particular ASCII value is assigned for one and only one relay. 1) A smartphone or an Android mobile which should have the android app installed in it.

Step 4: Building the Circuit

Moreover, also specify the Arduino digital pins connected with TX and RX pins of the HC-05 module. We will use a 16×2 LCD in our project to display the states of the appliances. To connect a 16×2 LCD with Arduino we will require an additional 10k potentiometer as well. Variables and the status of the respective appliance is toggled accordingly in If-else decision making statements. The status of each device is updated on the LCD display by replacing the strings on the screen. The Bluetooth module has six pins – Enable, VCC, Ground, Transmit Data , Receive Data and State.

It has 14 digital input/output pins , 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. As fuel costs rise and the availability and sustainability of our resources becomes a greater concern, heating/cooling our homes efficiently is less a budgetary bonus and more of a necessity.

In this section, we will explain the connections of the various components specified above with Arduino Uno to form the home automation system. Any smartphone with any version of Android installed on it will do the task. Applications of ULN2803a include relay drivers, lamp drivers, etc. The ULN2803A has a 2.7-kΩ series base resistor for each Darlington pair which makes it operable directly with TTL or 5-V CMOS devices. 4.Anyone can find free bluetooth apps on android and many more. Clipping is a handy way to collect important slides you want to go back to later.

Likewise, the green and blue bulbs will be controlled similarly with commands ‘blue on’, ‘blue off’, ‘green on’ and ‘green off’. If an appliance is in ON condition and number representing it is passed through the Bluetooth app, the Arduino switches the logic at the respective pin to LOW driving the relay to switch the appliance OFF. The change in the status of the appliance is updated on the LCD display and the LED indicating supply to the appliance stops glowing due to lack of forward voltage. HC-05 Bluetooth Transceiver ModuleHC-05 Bluetooth Transceiver module is used to establish communication between mobile phone and microcontroller. If you want to use GSM module instead of Bluetooth, there won't be any need for an Android App.

The communication is done one by one at one time in both direction between the android mobile phone and Bluetooth module. This article describes the implementation of a Bluetooth technology and an android application with voice prompts based home-automated system using an Arduino microcontroller. The system is aimed at designing an automated appliance control that is user-friendly and convenient to use. The design comprised an Arduino ATMEGA328 microcontroller board, Bluetooth module (HC-06), and an android application . The Arduino controls any connected component and was programmed with C++ programming language by using Integrated Development Environment . Relays and Triacs are used for the switching mechanism.

The system switches the home appliances ON and OFF using the android app, Bluetooth module, and voiced prompt. It can also be timed to switch off appliances for a pre-time of 12 h, thus making the application easy and convenient to operate via a smartphone. The client modules communicate with the host controller through a wireless device such as a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, in this case, an android based Smart phone. Arduino based home automation using Bluetooth project helps the user to control any electronic device using Device Control app on their Android Smartphone. The android app sends commands to the controller – Arduino, through wireless communication, namely, Bluetooth. The Arduino is connected to the main PCB which has five relays as shown in the block diagram.

5) Relays to control devices – We have used 12volt Single push single throw relays. To setup Bluetooth home automation system you need to have a on battery based applications. People are ready to pay more for homes equipped with smart devices and a home automation system. Wide-area, low-power wireless systems, such as Link Labs’ Symphony Link, allow end users to employ modules to communicate with a gateway.
